Today is the 4th of July, and therefore I take the opportunity to wish the United States a happy birthday. Despite it’s shortcomings, the USA is still the main champion of freedom in the world today. Without it’s pressure and preparedness to walk the walk, evil regimes like that of Iran or that of North Korea would feel a lot more at ease, and indeed would feel a lot less hesitant to spread their darkness to countries that, like mine, lack both the conviction and the ability to defend themselves.
Could we ask more of America? Yes, certainly. But we should should appreciate the sacrifice of their many young men and women around the world for the sake of democracy. It still has to be fought for, but, with the words of Thomas Jefferson:
[T]he flames kindled on the 4 of July 1776, have spread over too much of the globe to be extinguished by the feeble engines of despotism; on the contrary, they will consume these engines and all who work them.
I hope he was right.
