Economic fairness

Written by Johan on April 21, 2007 – 7:09 am

What is economic fairness? The left will tell you it has to do with equality. Those who earn more should pay those who earn less, so that the “income gap” stays relatively small. This is also the view commonly held by the media. Is it reasonable?

On his blog Stefan Karlsson presents a debate hosted by Larry Kudlow, that effectively provides a different perspective, equally dependent on equality. The fundamental question is this: why should someone who works harder be punished and pay a higher tax? The example given is that of two taxi drivers; one working hard driving double shifts, and one lazier driving only one shift. Is it really fair that the hard worker should have to give up a larger share of his income?

The debate is well worth reading, both for its unusual directness, and because it provides a good example of how classical liberalism can be presented in an intuitive fashion, clearly connected to most people’s sense of fairness and equality.
