Senator Joe Lieberman, independent Democrat from Connecticut, lectures his fellow Democrats on Iraq in today’s Washington Post. It’s well worth reading. One paragraph in particular is worth quoting:

When politicians here declare that Iraq is “lost” in reaction to al-Qaeda’s terrorist attacks and demand timetables for withdrawal, they are doing exactly what al-Qaeda hopes they will do, although I know that is not their intent.

Whenever someone points this out they are accused of wanting to silence the debate or of questioning someone’s patriotism. Yet, it is true. Al Qaeda knows that in order to fully succeed in Iraq they need to convince the American public (or media) that it is a pointless venture, and politicians responding in this fashion are confirming that it is a good strategy. It is not unreasonable to expect it to lead to more acts of terror rather than fewer.
