McCain and the economy
Written by Johan on January 27, 2008 – 12:13 amAs Senator John McCain does increasingly well in the polls it might be worthwhile to take a look at his views on economics. A few links to get you started.
Neutral (more or less): David Leonhardt, Tyler Cowen
Negative: Matthew Yglesias, Club for Growth
Positive: Greg Mankiw
Personally I am somewhere in the (more or less) neutral camp. McCain has talked about income distribution in a somewhat re-distributional style, and his views on taxes and the role of government are not entirely clear. At the same time he seems to be a genuine free trader, and appears somewhat likely to cut spending (or at least decrease the rate of increases in spending). Not perfect but not too shabby either, given political realities. I would also think that his chances of getting sensible policies through a Democratic Congress are better that average.
