Banning The Burqa
Written by Johan on June 27, 2009 – 7:11 pmThe French government is considering making it illegal to wear a burqa in public places. It is already forbidden at state institutions, and Sarkozy has voiced his support at expanding the law. That is a bad idea.
The burqa makes me uncomfortable. It strikes me as oppressive and representative of a world view that I fully disagree with. I would consider it a good thing if fewer people had to wear it (or indeed chose to wear it). But that is no reason to make it illegal. Using government force to prevent it does not change people’s views, nor is it an acceptable tool in order to do so. Stopping people from holding and expressing views in a way that ultimately does not infringe on the rights of others, is not a legitimate government policy.
I hope that French politicians do what is right (although I wouldn’t bet on it). If they do not, the law should be tried in court.
