Obama Tied With … Romney!
Written by Johan on July 21, 2009 – 7:19 pmWe are less than a year into Obama’s stint as president, so clearly an opinion poll taken today is not particularly interesting as far as predicting the 2012 election goes. But Rasmussen’s recent numbers are still noteworthy. If they are to be believed, Obama would tie Republican Mitt Romney if an election was held today. That is rather surprising.
The former Massachusetts governor, having governed as a centrist, tried to win the primaries as a conservative. That was probably a mistake, although it is doubtful that he would have done much better than McCain. Republicans aside, the poll says more about Obama than his competitors. The shine is wearing off, perhaps people are becoming increasingly sceptical of his expansive fiscal policy and expansion of government.
Certainly it will be a cause of worry for the White House, especially if the pattern is repeated in future polls. In the end, though, it’s just a poll and voter sympathies come and go. Obama could easily recover. Hopefully, he’ll figure the way to do it is through more fiscal responsibility, and a more limited expansion of Washington power. I rather doubt it.
