I’ve always wondered why television networks feel the need to let the viewers’ opinions on whatever is being debated float around the screen. It seldom adds anything, it takes away focus from the discussion at hand, and when the hosts repeatedly takes notice of it any form of meaningful discussion is prevented. Can anyone explain the appeal?

At least it makes for funny sketches.
