The Irish Fall In Line
Written by Johan on October 4, 2009 – 7:01 pmAs you are probably aware, the Irish made our EU masters delighted by reversing their earlier rejection of the Lisbon Treaty by a rather large margin. With the French and Dutch voters swept aside, the path towards the treaty passing looks clear. If you have followed this blog for a while, it should come as no surprise that I find this unfortunate. It is no disaster by any means, but it does open up new venues for political interference and populism driven regulation of both business and more personal affairs.
The weak role of democratic influence in the EU system (in the sense that it is difficult for voters to get rid of those people in power they feel do a poor job) might have been more acceptable when the project was mostly an inter-governmental concern. Now, when the Union is more of a state, it is a troubling issue.
