Twitter Victim
Written by Johan on April 11, 2010 – 2:22 pmThe new, connected, world has changed the rules of the political game. We have seen how bloggers, with small resources, have discovered hidden secrets that have damaged politicians sufficiently to force them to call off their campaigns.
British Labour Parliament candidate, Stuart MacLennan, may have committed the first new media political suicide. After twittering that he prefers “slave-grown” bananas, to fair-trade ones, and describing pensioners as “coffin-dodgers”, he’s been sacked from his role as candidate for Moray, in Scotland.
I find the extent to which people use public channels, like Twitter or Facebook, as if they were private, surprising. I expect we’ll see more of this in the future. It will be interesting to see how this type of behaviour will affect social conventions.
