A TRUE SWEDISH HERO
On the 17th of January 1945 - exactly 60 years ago today - the Russians arrested Raoul Wallenberg
in Budapest. He never returned.
Mr Wallenberg, a citizen of honour in the United States, Canada and Israel, saved tens of thousands of
Jews from death in the Nazi camps. Risking his only life time after time, and making full use of his
creative mind, he managed to keep the Jews away from the hands of the Nazis in the so called "Swedish houses"
where he hired them to all kinds of inventive tasks.
The 20th century saw few true Swedish heroes, but that's the only epithet that fits Mr Wallenberg. If you want
to read more about this great man I suggest you have a look at the website of the
International Raoul Wallenberg
Foundation.
