Below follows statistics and match reports from the epic duels between me and a couple of my pals
in the billiards hall.

WINTER CHAMPION DECIDED!
Finally the day arrived, when the first ever Winter Champion was to be decided. After a long season
resulting in a top spot for Fredrik it was now time for him to prove that he was a true champion. In a
best of nine frames head-to-head match against runner up Johan (erm... me, that is), it was all to be
decided. For the winner: the championship and eternal glory; for the loser: nothing. Below follows an
account of the epic battle that was fought.
The conditions: first to five frames of US 8-ball.
Frame one
Being the player of the season Fredrik was allowed to decide who was to make the first break of the
final. He chose to take advantage of it and broke the rack himself, leaving all balls on the table. After
some initial duelling Fredrik managed to pot one of the striped balls, and followed up with another two
consecutive pocketings. The streak was ended in a foul and Johan had the chance to get back in the frame.
He failed to take that chance, and after a few misses from both of the players Fredrik yet again found himself
in command, finishing the frame of with a brilliant streak of four balls - something he never managed during
the regular season. With the eightball in the corner pocket Fredrik was up, one frame to nothing.
Frame two
With Johan's breaking shot the second frame was underway. Yet again the break left all the balls on the
table, and yet again it was Fredrik who got the upper hand by pocketing a striped ball. Despite another
Fredrik foul Johan never managed to get his offensive game going in the frame, with Fredrik showing his
skills with a brilliant shot along the long wall leaving two of his balls in the pockets. With just the
8-ball left to sink, and with Johan having five of his balls resting on the table, Fredrik looked poised
to extend his lead. A close miss on the corner brought Johan back in action. He realised that his chances of
pocketing all of his balls without giving Fredrik a good oppertunity to close the frame were infinitly small, and
instead went for the defensive option. A good shot saw him hide the 8-ball from the cueball, and all of a
sudden Fredrik's victory looked far from certain. A brilliant bank shot saved Fredrik, but his arm was twisted
and he soon found himself snookered again. Forced to curve the ball along the table he saw the cueball bounce off
the short wall, and shoot off away from the 8-ball. Johan was back in the match, now tied at one.
Frame three
The third break was Fredrik's and yet again he managed to put himself in control, potting a striped ball with
a powerful shot. His dominance of the frame, this time never endangered, despited commiting a couple of shots. It
wasn't long before the situation of the last frame - Fredrik left with just the 8-ball, but missing and leaving
Johan with a chance to play - appeared on the table. Again, Johan went with the defensive option but the sharpness
of the previous game had apparently left him. The result - the cueball spinning down into the head-side corner, leaving
Fredrik with an easy shot for the frame. He took full advantage of it, and made the scored 2-1 in his favour.
Frame four
The fourth frame turned into a longer duel, mostly because of the cluster of balls that was the
result of Johan's break. After having missed a few good chances Fredrik continued to strengthen his grip
on the match, by pocketing a solid ball in the corner. Not managing to turn it into a streak, the cue went back
to Johan who decided to prove one of the Great Laws of Pool. If the route of the cueball isn't fully calculated
it will without exception end up in a pocket. After having ricocheted off several object balls, just kissing
the nineball, the cueball slowly did what it was supposed to: it fell into the pocket. Fredrik used the oppurtunity
gotten, and finished off the frame. He was now up 3-1.
Frame five
The fifth act of the drama saw Fredrik get off to yet another great start, this time picking
the solid balls, pocketing three in a row. The streak ended in a foul, though, and Johan finally
seemed to be finding his game. A three-ball counterstreaked answered the challenge, but - like Fredrik's -
the fourth attemped resulted in a foul. An army of missed shots and fouls followed, with Johan ending
that bad spell with a shot that bounced of the (defect - seriously!) corner and off unto the floor. Fredrik,
showing no mercy, took his shot at the eightball, and put himself just one frame from eternal glory. 4-1.
Frame six
The sixth, possibly deciding, frame didn't start well for Johan - while his break was the first in the match to
see a ball potted, it was the cueball. Fredrik, showing some defensive abilities, then proceeded to put Johan in
a difficult situation resulting in a foul. Fredrik once again off to a good start, even dared to attempt in a
double bank shot, sending the threeball smoothly down into the side pocket. When things were looking truly well
for the Player of the Season, he felt the cold hand of the defect pocket cast it's shade over his heart. Seeing a
last chance to keep the game alive, Johan finally started to pocket balls. Despite a close run at the end of the frame,
with Fredrik commiting a foul with just one ball left, Johan put the eightball down and lived another day. Or another
frame. 4-2.
Frame seven
Fredrik's break once again left all the balls on the table, and handed Johan the cue. He tried for an
easy shot on a striped ball, but missed terribly. The result: an elegant combination shot sending a different
striped ball into the corner pocket. Taking advantage of the sudden stroke of luck Johan continued to pocket balls
for another two shots, ending the streak with a defensive shot leaving Fredrik in some difficulties. With a brilliant
save Fredrik got out of the corner and then followed up with another sweet shot, which he merrily demanded we put
down in the protocol. Fredrik, feeling victory was close, then missed a shot, giving Johan another chance to stay in the
match. Making no mistakes Johan took that chance, and ended the frame with a streak making the score 4-3. With two frames
lost in a row, was Fredrik beginning to get nervous?
Frame eight
After another potless break, this time from Johan, Fredrik commited another foul. Johan, feeling the wind in his
back, quickly pocket three in a row before missing a shot. The tide of the battle then turned back and forth between
the two contestents, with a ball pocketed here and a ball pocketet there. Johan, managing to stay slightly ahead finally
got a chance to finish the frame, with Fredrik still having two solid balls to make before a legal attempt at the eightball
could be tried. With the eightball bouncing off the corner of the pocket, Fredrik could take a breath of relief. Getting
his early-frame concentration back he then brilliantly banked two balls in a row, into the same corner pocket that had
earlier thrown it's curse on him. After these displays of elegance he was left with a simple finish. Making no mistake,
Fredrik was now the undisputed Winter Champion.
WINTER CHAMPION 2005: FREDRIK

With the 64th match played this first season has come to an end and only the final remains,
to decide who'll become the first ever Winter Champion. The final match - best of nine frames -
will be played sometime in January next year, between the top two players.
With an impressive tally of 25 victories Fredrik is without doubt the Player of the Season, four
wins ahead of Johan (erm, that is me) and ten wins ahead of Bobo. Carl Johan, having only played
six matches had no fair chance of competing. Below follows the final statistics for this premier season.
